Celebrities paid big dollars to add buzz to Las Vegas nightclubs

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Three years ago, as Paris Hilton was about to turn 24, the celebutante got a sense of her worth to the nightclub industry in Las Vegas.

She had celebrated her previous three birthdays at Light, the Bellagio hotel-casino nightclub run by the Light Group. But for her 24th, another company swooped in with an offer that trumped the standard private jet to and from Los Angeles, a free stay at a luxury suite, a sumptuous dinner and, of course, free booze.

The hotel heiress would get a big paycheque - Light was told US$200,000 - just to party, but it had to be at PURE, a rival nightclub at Caesars Palace run by the PURE Management Group.

Her people let the Light Group know that their former deal was off.

"We said, 'OK, well listen, we're not here to tell you not to make money,' " said a former Light executive, who did not want to be identified talking about industry specifics.

Celebrities often make appearances and walk the red carpet as part of the deal for coming to a nightclub. In return for generating media coverage, they receive all sorts of free goodies, if not cash. For nightclub operators, it has become the standard way of getting their establishments known.

Besides buzz, it generates more patrons, more people willing to pay a $30 cover charge, $15 for a cocktail and $500 for a bottle of name-brand vodka or champagne.

"If you quantify that in terms of the amount of press they got off it, the press they got off it was priceless," the former executive said.

This weekend, PURE is looking to re-create its formula with the opening of LAX and Noir nightclubs at the Luxor hotel-casino, with a grand-opening party Friday night hosted by Britney Spears. The company would not say how much it is paying her or whether Spears would perform.

A revamped club, Blush at the Wynn hotel-casino, also is hoping to cash in by opening Friday.

It is the start of a raucous couple of weeks that include Labour Day weekend and the MTV Video Music Awards - events that will attract plenty of partiers and paparazzi.

PURE managing partner Steve Davidovici said rumours of celebrity payments are exaggerated and pointed to reports the group paid $250,000 to Spears eight months ago to host PURE's New Year's Eve countdown.

"That's a lot of sour grapes from other nightclubs, I guess," Davidovici said, while giving a tour of LAX, a plush club that resembles a chic 1920s opera house. "It's a third of those prices."

Even at that, the appearance fee, which works out to about $83,000, was money well spent, he said. The club sold a table next to Spears that night for $50,000 and some 3,000 revellers spent $250 on tickets.

"If you look at (the celeb fee) from a monetary standpoint, it's significant, but not if you're taking in half a million dollars," he said.

PURE nightclub alone will generate about US$53 million in revenue this year, while the company plans to gross more than $120 million from its 12 venues in Las Vegas and the Bahamas, he said.

On Tuesday, PURE nightclub hosted Paris Hilton and her sister, Nicky, as they unveiled new products from Nicky's clothing line. The club later gushed in a release that the sisters "danced their hearts out for the admiring onlookers" as "the two socialites stuck to the main VIP stage."

At LAX, the central focus of the theatre-like layout is a raised dais of booths in front of the dance floor for "super VIPs and celebrities," Davidovici said.

"Britney will definitely be up there opening night," he said.

Industry observers say such celebrity-spotting is worth the price of admission.

"It's fun to be famous and rich. That's why people pay to get in and watch," said Lori Levine, the president of Flying Television, a talent-booking firm in New York.

"If you go to a club to see one of the 'It' girls, you take a photo on your phone and you'll have a story to tell for the rest of the summer," she said.

The pay scale for celebrity ranges from free drinks to thousands of dollars.

NBA stars command appearance fees from $5,000 to $30,000 and models can broker $2,500 to $25,000, "depending on whether she's been in Victoria's Secret or Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue," said Ryan Schinman, president of the entertainment consulting firm Platinum Rye Entertainment.

In exchange, the stars are obliged to do little more than shine.

"Be (listed) on the invite, pose for some pictures and call it a day," Schinman said.

For Blush's second weekend, it is hosting a "gifting suite" for rockers getting ready to take the stage for the Sept. 9 MTV Video Music Awards. A list of up to 300 invitees includes Fergie, Nelly Furtado, Timbaland, 50 Cent, and U2.

Those who show up the day of the awards can get pampering from a barber and/or masseuse and will walk away with a gift bag stuffed with clothing, spa packages and jewelry.

"It's for them to come in, relax, enjoy themselves," said Blush marketing director Rosine Frangie, adding "there's going to be a small press wall (red carpet) inside."

Other than the requisite photo op, there are few rules for contracted talent appearances.

At Spears' New Year's Eve appearance at PURE, the new mother famously fell asleep around 1 a.m. and was helped out of the club, generating a barrage of scandalous Internet gossip.

Some said it did not matter a whit.

"Clubs don't care about bad behaviour," said Steve Striker, the founder of trip organizer Striker VIP. "It creates media, good hype or bad."

Light Group managing partner Andy Masi says his company does not pay for appearances but will supply jets, suites, dinners and drinks for celebrities on special nights such as club anniversaries - with tabs often running into the thousands of dollars. The group generally makes celebrities pay when they visit on their own.

Masi said red carpets are set up for press when celebrities want to promote their own projects or for anniversary bashes when the club wants to show off who came.

But unscripted celebrity appearances at Light's 10 restaurants and clubs in Las Vegas can do a better job of generating interest, he said.

"Afterward, the buzz gets out. Someone you know, Leonardo DiCaprio, seen eating in STACK or Tobey Maguire seen at FIX restaurant or Kevin Connolly hanging out at Jet (nightclub)," he said. "That stuff comes out afterward, but we're not crafting the entire night and spending money to create that. It's just happening naturally."

Both Light and PURE say building relationships with the stars and giving them great service is key to getting them to return. Both approaches appear to be working.

Light is set to make from $90 million to $120 million in revenue this year, open four new venues and manage a hotel-condo tower in the new CityCenter, Masi said.

Davidovici said it takes more than just buzz to keep venues making money, though.

"You couldn't get 5,000 people three nights a week for three years to come if you didn't run a real establishment, if our doormen were rude to people and the cocktail waitresses weren't friendly," he said.

"It's more about the regular customer than the celebrity, because that person is spending money."

Britney Spears comeback starts with sass

No one is going to accuse Britney Spears of being subtle.

The new dance track meant to resurrect the pop tart's stale career is out, and it begins with a defiant declaration: "It's Britney, b---h."

Featuring Brit's breathy vocals and a club-friendly beat, "Gimme More" made its official debut last night on radio station Z100's Web site and was also leaked to other sites.

The paparazzi magnet plans to appear Sept. 9 on the MTV Video Music Awards, where "Mindfreak" magician Criss Angel will use his best illusions to try to conjure up a comeback for her.

Angel will guide Spears in and out of a series of mirrors, making it seem as though she vanishes and then reappears several times, a source told the Daily News yesterday.

Other dancers in the complicated number are being called upon to harness up for simulated flight, the source said.

And even if the abracadabra act tanks, Spears will still be stinkin' rich.

Her average monthly income is a whopping $737,868, according to court documents filed by ex-hubby Kevin Federline, who's seeking custody of their young sons Sean Preston, 23 months, and Jayden James, 11 months.

K-Fed himself is receiving spousal support of $20,000 per month, according to the documents obtained by TMZ.com. Unfortunately for him, checks for Brit's baby daddy dry up Nov. 15.

"[Spears] is clearly the 'monied party' in this case," Federline attorney Mark Kaplan said in the heavily redacted filing.

The power lawyer, who's been handing out subpoenas left and right to Spears' associates, went on to request that the singer pony up $50,000 for her ex's legal expenses.

Child welfare authorities are investigating allegations that under Spears' watch, her tots have poor dental hygiene, a questionable diet and erratic sleeping schedules.

'Madonna about to adopt a second Malawi orphan'

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Madonna is planning to bring a second Malawian baby to the UK despite the controversy still raging over her previous adoption.

The 49-year-old superstar has to face inspectors next month to decide whether she should be allowed to keep 22-month-old Malawian David Banda.

But despite the question mark over his future, Madonna has already chosen a 13-month-old girl called Mercy from another orphanage.

Officials in Malawi yesterday confirmed they had given the singer the go-ahead to adopt the child from the Kondanani Orphan Care Centre.

She will have to lodge a formal application with the country's child welfare services but could bring the girl to her London home as soon as April next year.

Mercy - who has the nickname 'smiling angel' - will join David as well as Lourdes, Madonna's tenyearold daughter by her former personal trainer, and Rocco, her seven-year-old son with her British husband Guy Ritchie.

The singer is said to be overjoyed to be able to give her African son a sister from the same country 'to redress the balance'.

She hopes to have David's adoption finalised in January.

When she embarked on the process last October, Madonna was accused of cutting through red tape by offering to build a £2million orphanage instead of adhering to normal adoption laws, under which prospective parents have to live in Malawi for 18 months before they are allowed to take a child home.

But despite the controversy, the singer soon began to search for a little girl at the Kondanani orphanage in Blantyre.

She is said to have watched a video of 11 girls who were all potential candidates for adoption and spotted a three-yearold called Grace who had been at the orphanage since she was three months old.

Although she apparently set her heart on adopting Grace, the child's extended family objected.

Now she has been told she can adopt Mercy instead.

Chaotic Britney bares her soul...and her ass

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Most celebrities facing a custody battle and allegations of child abuse might make even a half-hearted attempt to clean up their act, and their public image – but not Britney Spears.

It was business as usual for the chaotic singer who appeared in public following the revelations wearing what could loosely be described as a floral mini dress – which exposed her ample bottom.

Clearly Britney is not overly worried about keeping up appearances in advance of her looming custody battle which centres on whether she is fit to be a parent, or the fact that ex-husband Federline is said to have served legal papers to a string of witnesses who can allegedly testify about her chaotic behaviour.

The singer's private life has long overshadowed her once successful pop career, but a leaked copy of a new ballad by the pop princess shows that could be about to change.

The song 'Baby Boy', one of the pop princess' first efforts after returning to the studio for the first time in more than two years was leaked on the internet, and it seems her recent troubles have provided her with the inspiration for her new material.

On the bluesy track, a husky-voiced Britney, bares her soul, and makes a clear reference to ex-husband Kevin Federline, as she sings about her "baby boy" who deserted her.

The pared-down backing track, which has a haunting music-box chime in the background, is still in the demo stage, but even so, the stripped-down new material is in stark contrast to her previous heavily produced pop numbers.

Britney sings:

"Everyday I'm in a daze, looking for that someone "And everyday, I sit and kneel and pray "Oh, sweet love, can I get some? "So why do you desert me, baby boy? "I thought that you were the one"

Then in the middle of the song and Britney is heard on the phone talking to her 'baby boy'. She asks: "Hey baby, what time you gonna get home?"

The lovelorn ballad ends with the lines:

"So why did you desert me, baby boy? "I thought that you, you were the one." "So if you preferred the other one, "She won't bring you the sun."

Spears and Federline, 29, are caught up in an ugly custody battle over sons Sean Preston, two next month, and Jayden James, eleven months.

And yesterday it was revealed she is also being investigated for possible child abuse.

The complaint, lodged with Department of Children and Family Services, alleges poor dental hygiene, as well as poor eating and sleeping habits for the boys.

Spears' recent off the wall indiscretions, which include a topless swimming pool romp with a stranger earlier this month, have led Federline to seek full custody of their children.

Clearly Spears has a lot on her mind, as the new white convertible Mercedes she was driving, broke down in the middle of the street after running out of gas.

However, luckily for the celebrity, the police were on hand to push her to a nearby petrol station.

Hours later, Spears went out for a drive locally again - and picked up a parking ticket.

Britney Spears Being Investigated For Possible Child Abuse

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

More bad news for Britney Spears. The newly blonde Brit is now being investigated for possible child abuse. Social workers are said to be making enquirers into her suitability as a mother following more and more reports of her erratic behavior. The child abuse allegations were reportedly raised at an unscheduled hearing this week at Los Angeles Superior Court. Although Spears was not present, her lawyer, Dennis Wasser, was said to be there along with Mark Kaplan, who represents her estranged husband, Kevin Federline.

Just another nail from KFed hammer into Brit’s coffin. She is going to end up giving that man her babies and an obscene amount of money for child support.

Bradley's rep insists that it is "not true" that the two are dating. However, insiders telling that Cameron and Bradley have been busy sending flirty text messages to each other throughout the day and spending quite a bit of time together.

This news comes on the heels of rumors in recent months regarding Cam's post-Justin love life, including rumblings that she was romantically tied to Criss Angel, David de Rothschild and John Mayer. (Cameron turns 35 this Thursday.)

She was just named one of the most eligible bachelorettes so its not surprising to hear about the many men that are interested in Cameron.

This could all just be the work of a great publicist since there also a news in nydailynews.com that Bradley may also be seeing Jennifer Aniston

Bradley, 32, filed for divorce from his wife of four months, Jennifer Esposito, in May. He is currently working on a movie with Sandra Bullock called All About Steve (he is Steve) and also scored a leading role in He's Just Not That into You.

Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie receive no special treatment

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

We understand the instinct to scream that the 82 minutes spent in jail by Nicole Richie and the brief one-day sentence handed down to Lindsay Lohan last week were just more cases of spoiled princesses getting away with murder, but don't overreact. Is it ridiculous that anyone go to jail for less time than it takes to watch Balls of Fury? Of course. It raises the question - Why bother? But blame the system, don't blame Nicole Richie. And the same thing holds true for Lindsay Lohan's light prison sentence. Both cases should serve more as examples of how screwed up the California system is than how much the beautiful people of Hollywood get special treatment.

Last Thursday, Lindsay Lohan reached a plea deal for her misdemeanor DUI and drug charges that sentenced the Mean Girls star to only one day in jail, ten days of community service, and a drug-treatment program. That same day, Nicole Richie went to the Century Regional Detention Center to serve her four days in jail and was let out only 82 minutes later. People freaked out. The New York Post claimed via headline that there was "Hard-ly Time for Bimbos" and blogs lit up.

Hold on. It's the guidelines of California that are to blame for the short time given and done by Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie, not the starlets or their reputations. Jane Robison, the spokeswoman for the LA district attorney's office told the press, as quoted by MTV, that both Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan were sentenced to the required minimum for someone charged with these crimes. The way the sentence for Lindsay Lohan broke down was that she was sentenced to the minimum of four days, but given credit for one day already served. She was then given the option to serve 10 days of community service to replace two more days, leaving only one day behind bars. It's standard procedure.

Robison explained to MTV, "That's standard for anybody convicted of these crimes. We filed seven misdemeanor counts, and she pleaded to five of those, and we dismissed two -- again, that's normal. We filed two separate DUIs for each incident, and she pleaded to two, and two were dismissed as part of her plea deal. "

We know what you're saying - what about the cocaine? As widely reported, a small amount of cocaine was found on the possession of Lindsay Lohan, but it was too small (below the .05 gram limit) for a felony filing. Both DUIs were misdemeanors as well. Robison explained, "This is all part of the California penal code. We don't care if someone's a celebrity or Jane Doe on the street - if what [Lohan] had done constituted a felony, we would have charged her with a felony."

Nicole Richie was let out for another standard problem - overcrowding. Typically, anyone sentenced to 30 days or less for nonviolent offenses usually gets out in under 12 hours. There's just no room and if they're not violent, no real urgency in keeping them. Steve Whitmore, a spokesperson for the sheriff's office, said, "Primarily, what happens is, if it's a nonviolent offense, and if it's a misdemeanor, and the sentence is under 30 days, because of the overcrowding in the jails, the sheriff has the discretion to release them early. Let's deal with the 90 hours [Richie received]. You do 10 percent of that, which is nine hours. And because of the fact that you have overcrowding, you usually process them in and process them out. That isn't even taking into account the good time/ work time [sentence-reduction credits earned by an inmate for good behavior and work performed], which we must follow from the state, because that's also taken off of the sentence. That's how that works. In anybody's case, that is the policy."

Nicole Richie never even made it to a jail cell. As Whitmore told MTV, "You're booked, you get a booking photo, you're arrested, and then you're released. It has nothing to do with the individual - that's the process."

In case you're getting ahead - it's unlikely that Lindsay Lohan will do a full day behind bars. She'll probably only do a few hours. Steve Meister, a former LA County deputy district attorney, told MTV that he's had clients with 10-day sentences be released by noon of their first day. Meister told MTV, "If you're a citizen, it doesn't sound right. But if it happens to you, you're going to want it to happen this way. Even though [Lohan and Richie] are celebrities, they're not getting any more or any less time than they should. Lohan, for all the stuff she did, it sure seems like she'd be doing a little more jail time. But they got her community service, and it's clear that she's a serious addict. There were no injuries as a result of her crime, it's a misdemeanor - her sentence is within the limits of reason in L.A. County. Some people might get a little more time, but no one would get less. I don't think she got this sentence or was charged with misdemeanors because of who she is. The charges fit the facts, and the punishment fits the crime."

Paris Hilton Parties With Kid, Keisha and Jessica

Paris Hilton had another party at her Malibu Beach pad over the weekend. The biggest surprise was the absence of Adrian Grenier in favor of a different male companion.

The heiress, who sported a sophisticated hairdo after removing her extensions for the first time in months, spent most of the day chatting it up with the laughable Kid Rock.
Bare-chested and heavily-tattooed, Kid, who was married for a whole six months to Baywatch babe Pamela Anderson, even “disappeared (with Paris) into her house and didn’t come out for hours,” according to paparazzi on the scene eager to get hookup rumors started.

The evening didn’t end there, as Paris ditched Kid and joined up with Keisha Castle Hughes to walk a few houses away and visit more friends at the LG House.

The night finally came to an end after party-hopping Paris made her way to a third and final stop at yet another Malibu Beach get-together, also attended by Jessica Simpson. Hilton took her cue to leave, bolting immediately after Simpson hit the exit.

Enjoy the pictures of Paris at her party with Kid, walking to the LG House with Keisha, and of Jessica Simpson at Paris’ final party stop (August 25).

NEW YORK (AP) — Hot dogs from a Times Square street vendor? Helicopter to a Hurricane Katrina benefit in the Hamptons? All part of Brangelina's whirlwind New York weekend.

Megastars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were spotted Friday with kids Maddox, Zahara and Pax shopping at Lee's Art Shop on West 57th Street. Baby Shiloh was not there.

According to the New York Post, the family then headed toward Times Square, where Pitt ordered five hot dogs from a street vendor, three with ketchup and mustard, two with just ketchup.

"I didn't know who he was," said vendor Mahmoud Omer, who added that Pitt wanted relish but he didn't have any.

The Mr. and Mrs. Smith stars enjoyed a culinary upgrade Saturday when they attended a fundraiser at the home of Tribeca Film Festival co-founders Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff in Watermill, N.Y.

The Daily News reported Sunday that Pitt and Jolie left the kids with nannies and helicoptered to the Hamptons for the event, where they were joined by Christie Brinkley, Ellen Barkin and Jimmy Buffet.

The dinner was a benefit for Pitt's Make it Right project, which is focused on rebuilding New Orleans' Ninth Ward with environmentally friendly homes.

Lindsay Lohan caught having sex in rehab

It seems that Lindsay Lohan cannot give up her bad girl image, not even in rehab, for she was caught getting steamy with a male patient in one of the bathroom’s at the Cirque Lodge, Utah.

The ‘Mean Girls’ star’s dirty antic was busted after staff members heard moaning noises coming from inside a cubicle, and discovered Lohan being naughty with the male patient.

"Staff were alerted to the bathroom because there were strange noises coming from inside and two voices could be heard. When they opened the door, Lindsay was in a compromising position with the guy — who's also at Cirque for drug rehab,” the News of the World quoted an insider, as saying.

“Rumours spread like wildfire across the place that they'd been having sex.

When staff found them they were all flustered and Lindsay's hair was all over the shop,” the insider added.

The insider went on to say that Lindsay fought back because she was in a bad mood about being given toilet-cleaning duties.

"She was livid that she was given the miserable task of cleaning the bogs so the theory was she'd do something really dirty in there. Lindsay has been throwing tantrums like a little kid, telling everyone that she misses partying,” the insider said.

"It's a lost cause as it's clear that she can't wait to get back to her normal, partying lifestyle,” the insider added.

Britney Spears caught in the Fast Lane

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Britney Spears continued her downward public relations, and likely child custody, image as she was once again pulled over by state troopers in the wee morning hours. This time, however, it was for speeding not DUI.

Spears was, as before, wearing a wig and hat to disguise herself, reports X-17 Online, and had two male dancers in the car with her when the incident occurred at just before 1:00 in the morning California time.

According to the report, Spears was speeding on Interstate Highway 10 when the Highway Patrol officers saw the white Mercedes racing along the road.

Police attempted to pull the car over, but Spears reportedly refused to pull over until a mile later when she drove into a gas station and parked.
After pleading to the cops that she was being chased by paparazzi, the officers let her off with a warning, as one of the male dancers supposedly volunteered to take the wheel in order to drive her home.

Pictures of the Pop Princess looking decidedly pathetic courtesy of X-17 Online.

This comes on the heels of news reports that the SPCA went to her home to check on the care of her toy Yorkie, London, who recently suffered a broken leg.

They were only able to leave a note with the housekeeper, reports TMZ.com.

In the meantime, Spears is fighting a legal battle to keep her children in a heated custody case with their father, Kevin Federline, who has been serving legal papers to all her close associates.

And Spears is also reportedly planning to open the MTV Video Music Awards show on September 9th, according to an Access Hollywood report, which states "there is 'a very strong chance' Britney will open the awards show at the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on September 9." (c) tPC
